The Stanley Theatre Group is a self financed amateur company made up of seasoned veterans of the amateur circuit and enthusiastic novices, all untrained and all of whom have day jobs, families, or are retired. The group started life in the fifties under the banner Tracom Repertory Company, the name being amalgam of tragedy and comedy, reflecting their members' original aim to alternate productions between two different theatrical forms.
Productions shown in the fifties at The Methodist Hall in Acocks Green included :
Admission was available by programme at the cost of two shillings.
Productions were then moved to Hobs Moat Assembly Rooms,
Solihull during the sixties.
Some of the shows shown include:
The name change, in the sixties, "The Stanley Players" was a tribute to the companies then producer Stanley Evans, who tragically died suddenly of a heart attack. Under both guises, the group staged regular productions at the former Birmingham Theatre Centre in Islington Row, of which one of productions included "Double Trouble" a comedy by Michael Brett.
When Birmingham's famous old rep theatre opened its doors to amateur groups in September 1972, the Stanley's gained the distinction to be the first amateur society to appear there, with their production of Noel Cowards "Present Laughter".
The Stanley Theatre Group now show two productions
a year at the Old Birmingham Rep Theatre,
